ANSWER PERSON RESPONDS: The Dept. of Eduction’s Digest of Education Statistics has data that lags a few years. For 1999/2000, the latest year that they have data for both public and private schools, the high school total is 14,187,695. This includes 50 states plus DC, but not outlying areas such as Puerto Rico, Samoa, etc. They have those numbers if you want to add them in. http://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d03/lt2.asp#c2_1
For middle school, they don’t have the grades broken down for private schools (just grades 1-8). For public schools, for Fall 2001, the numbers for grades 6-8 add to 11,110,756 for 50 states plus DC. Go to that website for more detail.
