A Long and Happy Life

Reynolds Price in England.

Lines of Life

Various as roads, the lines life takes—
Twisting like the boundaries of lakes.
What we lack here, some god can there increase
With harmonies, amends, enduring peace.

—After Hölderlin

  1. Thank you for this post. I spent many hours in the Rare Book room reading Price’s papers, studying his manuscript notes, imagining how Rosacoke and Wesley sprang to life in his elegant mind. I was never brave enough to take his classes, but I considered my time in the Rare Book Room among your RP collection to be my independent study, a private tutorial with a true Duke genius and gentleman.

  2. Thank you, Stephanie, for sharing this with us. We’re pleased that the RBMSCL could serve as the setting for your acquaintance with Professor Price, and we join you in celebrating his life and work.
