Taking as a point of departure <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Athanasius_Kircher\">Athanasius Kircher<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/library.duke.edu\/catalog\/search\/recordid\/DUKE001399452\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Ars Magna Sciendi<\/span><\/a> (often translated as <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Great Art of Knowing<\/span>), the film attempts a reconstruction of the lives of William Byrd and his daughter Evelyn, and underlines the centuries-old desire to build systems of total knowledge and complete understanding.<\/p>\n<p>Gatten is the 2010 Distinguished Visiting Filmmaker for Duke&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/fvd.aas.duke.edu\/\">Program in the Arts of the Moving Image<\/a>. His residency is funded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.provost.duke.edu\/committees\/arts.html\">Provost&#8217;s Council for the Arts<\/a> Visiting Artist Residency grant.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his 2005 Guggenheim Fellowship, Gatten has shown his films at the Whitney Biennial, the Toronto International Film Festival, the London Film Festival, and several other international film festivals.
