{"id":6215,"date":"2012-10-02T14:20:16","date_gmt":"2012-10-02T19:20:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/?p=6215"},"modified":"2012-10-02T14:20:16","modified_gmt":"2012-10-02T19:20:16","slug":"digitizing-the-lcrm-update-5-getting-out-the-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/2012\/10\/02\/digitizing-the-lcrm-update-5-getting-out-the-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Digitizing the LCRM: Update #5, Getting Out the Vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With election fever infecting a large part of the country, it is only appropriate that this month\u2019s featured documents from Duke\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.trln.org\/ccc\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">CCC Project<\/a> digitized collections are newspaper advertisements about voter turnout from the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/harrisrencher\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rencher Nicholas Harris Papers<\/a>.\u00a0 What makes these documents particularly interesting\u2014and disturbing\u2014is the demographic group that they targeted:\u00a0 white voters frightened about the perceived usurpation of power by an African-American voting bloc.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_6216\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6216\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/10\/rnhmsblog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6216\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/10\/rnhmsblog.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"617\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Political Advertisement, Undetermined Newspaper, [May 1949?]:<br \/>Rencher Nicholas Harris Papers, Box 10, Folder 2.<\/figcaption><\/figure><figure id=\"attachment_6217\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6217\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/10\/rnhms2blog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6217\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/10\/rnhms2blog.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/10\/rnhms2blog.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/10\/rnhms2blog-253x300.jpg 253w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6217\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Political Advertisements, Undetermined Newspaper, [May 1949?]:<br \/>Rencher Nicholas Harris Papers, Box 10, Folder 2.<\/figcaption><\/figure>These advertisements likely appeared in one of Durham\u2019s newspapers in the days before the local elections of May 1949.\u00a0 I determined the probable date by looking at the other materials in the Harris Papers located near these clippings.\u00a0 Two possible dates emerged\u2014May 1949 and November 1956.\u00a0 While both dates are plausible, the fact that the advertisements speak specifically to Durham\u2019s leadership rather than a presidential or gubernatorial election makes 1949 more likely.\u00a0 In addition, the fact that Election Day was a Saturday is another strike against 1956.\u00a0 We encourage readers of this blog to decipher the exact date of these advertisements as well as their original newspaper(s) and the persons behind the generically-named \u201cPublic Spirited Citizens of the Community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Beyond determining the provenance of these advertisements, we anticipate that most readers will find these advertisements most interesting for their racial arguments.\u00a0 The fears that undergirded these advertisements relied on the two-pronged belief that African-American voters would turn out in large numbers and that all of those voters would cast their ballots monolithically.\u00a0 While the language in the advertisements is clearly prejudiced, its reliance upon believing that African-American leaders were successfully organizing get-out-the-vote efforts is an oddly-backhanded compliment to Harris and his political allies.\u00a0 The language in these advertisements is ripe for further analysis, so we encourage our readers to dive in and become immersed in the racial and political history of Rencher Nicholas Harris\u2019s time on the Durham City Council.<\/p>\n<p><em>The grant-funded <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.trln.org\/ccc\/index.htm\">CCC Project<\/a> is designed to digitize selected manuscripts and photographs relating to the long civil rights movement.
