{"id":5764,"date":"2012-07-25T07:00:39","date_gmt":"2012-07-25T12:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/?p=5764"},"modified":"2012-07-23T12:51:40","modified_gmt":"2012-07-23T17:51:40","slug":"new-acquisitions-week-day-three-calligraphic-devotion-and-haitian-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/2012\/07\/25\/new-acquisitions-week-day-three-calligraphic-devotion-and-haitian-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"New Acquisitions Week, Day Three: Calligraphic Devotion and Haitian Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re celebrating the beginning of a new fiscal year with a week&#8217;s worth of new acquisitions from the first half of 2012.\u00a0 Two newly acquired selections will be featured in a post every day this week.\u00a0 All of these amazing resources are available for today&#8217;s scholars, and for future generations of researchers in the Rubenstein Library!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<em>Kitab Dala\u2019il al-Khairat wa Shawariq al-Anwar fi Dhikr al-Salah \u2018ala al-Nabi al-Mukhtar [Guidebook of Benefits and Illuminations of Prayers to the Chosen Prophet]<\/em>.\u00a0 The Dala\u2019il al-Khairat of al-Jazuli (Al-Jazuli, Abu \u2018Abdallah Muhammad ibn Sulaymana, d. 1465) is one of the most popular devotional works in Islam, comprising a cycle of prayers to the prophet Muhammad.\u00a0 The manuscript now at Duke is Arabic written in the Maghrebi script, and likely was created in North Africa in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century.\u00a0 The manuscript also contains other prayers and devotional texts.\u00a0 Its calligraphy and ornamentation are beautiful witnesses to a text of surpassing importance in the Muslim faith.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5769\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5769\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/07\/arabicms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5769\" title=\"arabicms\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/07\/arabicms.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/07\/arabicms.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/07\/arabicms-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Opening from the newly acquired manuscript of the Dala&#8217;il al-Khayrat. Arabic in Maghrebi script.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>National Coalition for Haitian Rights Records: This organization is dedicated to furthering the civil and international human rights of the Haitian community in the US and helping influence US policy over Haiti to support human rights.\u00a0 In over 146 linear feet of material, the records document the activity of the Coalition from 1981 to 2003.\u00a0 This adds to a growing collection of material in the<a href=\"http:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/human-rights\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"> Human Rights Archive<\/a> related to human rights in Haiti;
