{"id":5005,"date":"2012-03-14T15:07:33","date_gmt":"2012-03-14T20:07:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/?p=5005"},"modified":"2012-03-14T15:07:33","modified_gmt":"2012-03-14T20:07:33","slug":"finding-aid-facelift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/2012\/03\/14\/finding-aid-facelift\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding Aid Facelift!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><\/strong>According to Wikipedia, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Finding_aid\">finding aids<\/a> are a concept dating back to ancient\u00a0clay tablets.\u201d \u00a0While I certainly didn\u2019t learn that factoid in library school, I suppose that if you\u2019re writing on tablets, then you probably need a special tablet (a finding aid?) that tells you where you put all of the other tablets, right? Maybe\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Whatever their origins, finding aids are an important tool for locating material in archival collections and last month the Rubenstein Library\u2019s online finding aids got a major facelift.\u00a0 We\u2019ve brought them out of the Stone Age by completely overhauling the layout and introducing some new functionality.\u00a0 With these improvements, we hope our finding aids are more attractive and usable for both researchers and staff.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the major enhancements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New URL for finding aid homepage<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/\">http:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>What box is my stuff in? \u00a0<\/strong>Requesting the wrong box is frustrating.\u00a0 With new color coding, repeating box numbers, and other visual cues, it\u2019s now easier to determine which container to request.\u00a0 Container numbers have been moved to the right-hand side of the page so as not to interfere with description.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_5010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5010\" style=\"width: 239px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/03\/nav-box.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5010\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/03\/nav-box.jpg\" alt=\"Navigation Box for the new Rubenstein Finding Aids\" width=\"239\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/03\/nav-box.jpg 239w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2012\/03\/nav-box-133x300.jpg 133w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Navigation Box now on all finding aids<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li><strong>Boring stuff moved to the bottom<\/strong>.\u00a0 Finding aid usability studies indicate that administrative information, subject headings, and lengthy biographical notes are infrequently used, so we\u2019ve relocated those sections to the bottom of the finding aid, keeping the most useful information at the top.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Floating navigation box.\u00a0 <\/strong>A navigation box at the right of the screen stays with you as you scroll, making it easy to navigate to other sections in the finding aid wherever you are.\u00a0 You can\u2019t outrun it. Don\u2019t even try.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Search this finding aid!\u00a0 <\/strong>A search box in the finding aid navigation box lets you search for keywords in the text of any finding aid.\u00a0 It\u2019s just like your browser\u2019s \u201cCtrl F\u201d function!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Series Quick Links. \u00a0<\/strong>The \u201cSeries Quick links\u201d feature in the navigation box activates a small pop-up in the bottom right of the screen for quickly navigating through different series in a collection.
