Walter Thompson Competitive Advertisements Collection<\/a>, we couldn\u2019t help but wonder what would\u2019ve been on Don Draper\u2019s holiday shopping list.\u00a0 The Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History<\/a> has a few suggestions for him. . . .<\/p>\n

For Sally:<\/strong> Topper Toys advertised a line of Suzy Homemaker\u00ae products for girls who were \u201csquare\u201d because they washed regularly, wore shoes rather than beads, and got \u201cmore fun out of being a cook than a kook.\u201d Rebellious Sally will surely love spending the day cleaning with her new Vacuum and Super Sweeper, baking Dad a chocolate cake with the High Speed Mixer and Safety Oven, and then getting gussied up at the Vanity before she sneaks out to see Glen. The perfect gift to reinforce traditional gender roles (or perhaps the best way to create a feminist)!<\/p>\n

For Roger Sterling:<\/strong> What could be better than Milton Bradley\u2019s Drop in the Bucket game, the highlight of the next office holiday party! Apparently it was \u201cso zip-zap new\u201d that you would be “hailed like Columbus for discovering it.” Who else would have the nerve to strap a net to his waist as coworkers try to drop \u201cbouncy cubes\u201d in it?\u00a0 Just add a few martinis and watch the merriment commence!<\/p>\n

For Megan:\u00a0<\/strong> Jewelry is the obvious choice for Don\u2019s new young wife, and nothing says \u201cI love you\u201d more than the tagline \u201cFake hair, fake nails, fake lashes, but real jewelry.\u201d\u00a0 Only the best for his lovely bride!<\/p>\n

For Betty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don still has a soft spot for his ex-wife, so he needs to find something that says \u201cMerry Christmas and I\u2019m sorry I never told you my real name.\u201d\u00a0 How about astrology soap on a rope!\u00a0 \u201cBoldly sculptured\u201d in \u201cfragrances and colours to match every personality,\u201d I\u2019m sure he will find the one that fits Betty\u2019s polished, repressed and passive aggressive nature.<\/p>\n

And Don, don\u2019t forget Rover<\/strong>! French\u2019s People Crackers for Dogs would be the perfect choice for the furry member of his family. The dog can literally take a bite out of the mailman, the policeman, and even the dogcatcher!<\/p>\n

Don will surely be thirsty after all that shopping.\u00a0 Since he is cutting back on alcohol, why unwind with some drink ideas from Campbell\u2019s Soup? Perhaps he could make Tomato Ice by freezing Tomato Soup, or chill some Consomm\u00e9 until it jellies and serve it with \u201ca lemon slice, cucumber or sour cream.\u201d And who doesn\u2019t love Beef Broth on the Rocks \u201cpoured right from the can over ice\u201d? That\u2019s what we call \u201cMmm Mmm\u00a0 Good!\u201d (This ad is from the Roy Lightner Collection of Antique Advertisements<\/a>.)<\/p>\n
