Camera! Action! film series begins with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebetrayalmovie.com\/\"><em>The Betrayal<\/em> (<em>Nerakhoon<\/em>)<\/a>, winner of the Spectrum Award at the 2008 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fullframefest.org\/\">Full Frame Documentary Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Filmed over the course of 23 years,\u00a0 this is the epic story of a Lao soldier family\u2019s journey from war-torn Laos to the mean streets of New York. Thavisouk Phrasavath describes his own life as a young man struggling to survive a war and survive the hardships of immigrant life, counterpointed by his mother\u2019s astonishing tale of perseverance. Renowned cinematographer Ellen Kuras&#8217; directorial debut is a remarkable collaboration with Phrasavath\u2014a poetic, cinematically-resonant film about the hidden, human face of war\u2019s &#8220;collateral damage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A discussion with co-director Thavisouk Phrasavath will follow the film. The screening is co-sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/kenan.ethics.duke.edu\/\">Kenan Institute for Ethics<\/a> and Duke&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/undergraduatedean.duke.edu\/winterforum\/\">2012 Winter Forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Rights! Camera! Action! film series, which is sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.duke.edu\/specialcollections\/human-rights\/index.html\">Archive for Human Rights<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.duke.edu\/specialcollections\/collections\/photography.html\">Archive of Documentary Arts<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/humanrights.fhi.duke.edu\/\">Duke Human Rights Center<\/a>, the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fhi.duke.edu\/\"> Franklin Humanities Institute<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/fvd.aas.duke.edu\/screensociety\/\">Screen\/Society<\/a> at Duke\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/fvd.aas.duke.edu\/\">Arts of the Moving Image Program<\/a>, features documentaries on human rights themes that were award winners at the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fullframefest.org\/\">Full Frame Documentary Film Festival<\/a>.
