The first grant began with the Sallie Bingham Center for Women\u2019s History and Culture\u2019s Mary Lily Research Travel Grant program and grew to include the John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History and Culture; John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising &amp; Marketing History; History of Medicine Collections; Human Rights Archive; and most recently, the Harry H. Harkins T\u201973 Travel Grants for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History.<\/p>\n<p>As archivists, we have long understood that research, scholarship, writing, and creative processes take time. The outcomes from the people and projects we support often come to fruition years in the future. Thankfully, we stay in touch with many of our grant recipients long after they visit the Rubenstein Library, and are thrilled to celebrate their publications and projects once they are out in the world. Rubenstein Rare Book &amp; Manuscript Library, c. 20th c.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Lindsey Beal<\/strong>, Mellon Faculty Fellow at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, received a History of Medicine travel grant in March 2016. Beal\u2019s photographic work, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lindseybeal.com\/parturition\">Parturition<\/a>, features History of Medicine Collections instruments and artifacts with a focus on obstetric and gynecological tools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordscholarship.com\/view\/10.1093\/oso\/9780190675684.001.0001\/oso-9780190675684\"><em>Little Cold Warriors: American Childhood in the <\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordscholarship.com\/view\/10.1093\/oso\/9780190675684.001.0001\/oso-9780190675684\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-15645\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/LittleColdWarriors_Cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"139\" height=\"211\" \/><\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordscholarship.com\/view\/10.1093\/oso\/9780190675684.001.0001\/oso-9780190675684\"><em>1950s<\/em><\/a> by <strong>Victoria Grieve<\/strong>, Associate Professor of History at Utah State University, was published by the Oxford University Press in 2018. Dr. Grieve visited the Rubenstein Library in May 2016 as a Foundation for Outdoor Advertising Research and Education Fellow through the Hartman Center to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/oaaaarchives\/\">Outdoor Advertising Association of America archives<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/orrgarrett\/\">Garrett Orr papers<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/jwtwritingsspeeches\/\">J. Walter Thompson Co. Writings and Speeches Collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-15643\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/HerNeighborsWife_Cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"138\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/HerNeighborsWife_Cover.jpg 243w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/HerNeighborsWife_Cover-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upenn.edu\/pennpress\/book\/16003.html\"><em>Her Neighbor\u2019s Wife: A History of Lesbian Desire Within Marriage<\/em><\/a> by <strong>Lauren Jae Gutterman<\/strong>, professor of American studies at the University of Texas at Austin, was published in 2019 by the University of Pennsylvania Press. Dr. Gutterman received a Mary Lily Research Travel Grant from the Bingham Center in 2013. Her research focused on the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/prattminniebruce\/\">Minnie Bruce Pratt papers<\/a>, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/alfa\/\">Atlanta Lesbian Feminist Alliance\u2019s archives<\/a> and the papers of prominent feminist thinkers <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/morganrobin\/\">Robin Morgan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/millett\/\">Kate Millett<\/a>. Dr. Gutterman is also co-host of the podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sexinghistory.com\/\"><em>Sexing History<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Marjorie Lorch<\/strong>, Professor of Neurolinguistics, Department of Applied Linguistics and Communication, University of London, visited the Rubenstein Library in February 2018 as a History of Medicine Collections grant recipient, utilizing the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/bastianhenry\/\">Henry Charles Bastian papers<\/a> for her research. Her article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fnana.2019.00052\/full\">The long view of language localization<\/a>\u201d was published in<em> Frontiers in Neuroanatomy<\/em> in May 2019. She also co-authored an article with R. Whurr, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/0964704X.2019.1589874\">The laryngoscope and nineteenth-century British understanding of laryngeal movements<\/a>,\u201d <em>Journal of the History of the Neurosciences<\/em>, also published in May 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachel R. Miller<\/strong> successfully defended her dissertation \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/artsandsciences.osu.edu\/women-rachelmiller\">The Girls\u2019 Room: Bedroom Culture and the Ephemeral Archive in the 1990s<\/a>\u201d to complete her Ph.D. in English at the Ohio State University on May 18, 2020. She received a Mary Lily Research Grant to use the Bingham Center\u2019s zine collections in 2018. Since her defense was held via videoconference, Dr. Miller noted on Twitter, \u201cI\u2019ve been working for four years on a project about how teenage girls\u2019 bedrooms are archival spaces, so I guess it\u2019s only appropriate that I\u2019ll be defending my project from my bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erik A. Moore<\/strong>, postdoctoral associate at the University of Oklahoma\u2019s Humanities Forum, visited the Rubenstein Library in May 2017 as a Human Rights Archive grant recipient. His article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/09592296.2018.1528789\">Rights or Wishes? Conflicting Views over Human Rights and America\u2019s Involvement in the Nicaraguan Contra War<\/a>\u201d was published in the journal <em>Diplomacy &amp; Statecraft<\/em> (v. 29, no. 4) in October 2018. Dr. Moore used the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/wola\/\">Washington Office on Latin America records<\/a> in his research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wangui Muigai<\/strong>, Assistant Professor in African and African American Studies and History at Brandeis University, is a historian of medicine and science. She received a Franklin Grant in 2015 for research on infant mortality and race from slavery to the Great Migration. Dr. Muigai \u00a0was awarded the Nursing Clio inaugural prize for best journal article for \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1353\/bhm.2019.0003\">\u2018Something Wasn\u2019t Clean\u2019: Black Midwifery, Birth, and Postwar Medical Education in All My Babies<\/a>\u201d in the <em>Bulletin of the History of Medicine<\/em> (v. 93, no. 1,) in 2019, which cites an interview from the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/btv\/\">Behind the Veil oral history collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentuckypress.com\/9780813178257\/john-hervey-wheeler-black-banking-and-the-economic-struggle-for-civil-rights\/#.XXK52K2ZNBw\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-15644 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/JohnHerveyWheeler_Cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/JohnHerveyWheeler_Cover.jpg 596w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/JohnHerveyWheeler_Cover-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 165px) 100vw, 165px\" \/><em>John Hervey Wheeler, Black Banking, and the Economic Struggle for Civil Rights<\/em><\/a> by <strong>Brandon K. Winford<\/strong>, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, was published by the University of Kentucky Press in 2019. . Dr. Winford is a graduate of North Carolina Central University and went on to receive his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He was awarded a Franklin Research Center grant in 2015-2016. While visiting the Rubenstein Library, Dr. Winford consulted the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/ncmutual\/\">North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company archive<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/spauldingcc\/\">C.C. Spaulding papers<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/spauldingasaelna\/\">Asa and Elna Spaulding papers<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/harrisrencher\/\">Rencher Nicholas Harris papers.<\/a> In February 2020, Dr. Winford returned to Duke to give a talk about the book and his research at the Duke University Law School.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15642 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/Crap_Cover-678x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/Crap_Cover-678x1024.jpg 678w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/Crap_Cover-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/Crap_Cover-768x1159.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2020\/08\/Crap_Cover.jpg 848w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.uchicago.edu\/ucp\/books\/book\/chicago\/C\/bo44254507.html\"><em>Crap: A History of Cheap Stuff in America<\/em><\/a> by <strong>Wendy Woloson<\/strong>, Associate Professor of History, Rutgers-Camden, will be published by the University of Chicago Press in September 2020. Dr. Woloson visited the Rubenstein Library as a Hartman Center grant recipient in 2017 and used the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/advertisingephemera\/\">Advertising Ephemera Collection<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/findingaids\/slabaugharlie\/\">Arlie Slabaugh Collection of Direct Mail Literature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kelly Wooten, Research Services and Collection Development Librarian for the Sallie Bingham Center.
