blog series<\/h6>\n<p>A recently acquired photograph album offers a study of the landscape, culture, and the realities of travel in a remote region in the steppes of Central Asia, through the camera of British Army officer Sir Percy Molesworth Sykes.\u00a0 Charged as acting Consul-General in Chinese Turkestan, now Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, Sykes had to travel from England to the capital city of Kashgar.\u00a0 In an unusual turn of events for the time, he was accompanied on this arduous overland journey by his sister, Ella Constance Sykes, also a Fellow of the Geographical Society and a well-regarded writer on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>In March 1915, when the two set off for their arduous nine-month journey, World War I was in full tilt, thus their northerly route through Norway. \u00a0Meanwhile, in Central Asia, after decades of conflict which included the Crimean War, Russians, Turks, English, Chinese, and British Empire troops from India, were still grappling to extend their control over these strategically important regions. \u00a0Lieutenant Colonel Sykes\u2019 camera recorded the presence of these nationalities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Chinese-Troops-edit-big.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14468 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Chinese-Troops-edit-big.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese troops lined up with bayonets and drummer boys.\" width=\"2091\" height=\"1503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Chinese-Troops-edit-big.jpg 2091w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Chinese-Troops-edit-big-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Chinese-Troops-edit-big-768x552.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Chinese-Troops-edit-big-1024x736.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2091px) 100vw, 2091px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Russians-big-edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14470 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Russians-big-edit.jpg\" alt=\"Three Russian officials standing together, a camel passes by in the background.\" width=\"523\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Russians-big-edit.jpg 523w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Russians-big-edit-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In researching this collection of photographs, I discovered that brother and sister also recorded their experiences in a co-authored travel memoir, <em>Through deserts and oases of Central Asia<\/em> (1920, available online); it includes many of the photographs found in the album. \u00a0To find a written companion piece to a photograph album is a stroke of luck, as with its help I could confirm dates, locations, and a historical context for the photographs found in the album.<\/p>\n<p>Ella Sykes wrote Part I of the memoir, which describes the journey in vivid detail, and her brother, Part II, which focuses on the region\u2019s geography, history, and culture. \u00a0In her narrative, Ella occasionally recounts taking photographs of various scenes, such as the image on page 92 of women at a female saint\u2019s shrine.\u00a0 A note in the image index states that \u201cThe illustrations, with one exception, are from reproductions of photographs <em>taken by the authors<\/em>\u201d (emphasis mine); clearly, some of the book\u2019s illustrations are her work.\u00a0 The question arises, did she take any of the images found in the album?<\/p>\n<p>Of the photographs in the album that also appear in the Sykes\u2019 book, several are found in the section written by Ella, leading one to think perhaps she took them, including a different version of this group, found in the album:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Kirghiz-Women-Edit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-14472 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Kirghiz-Women-Edit.jpg\" alt=\"Kirghiz women standing together in front of a yurt.\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Kirghiz-Women-Edit.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Kirghiz-Women-Edit-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Kirghiz-Women-Edit-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/rubenstein\/files\/2018\/12\/Kirghiz-Women-Edit-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, the title of the photograph album, handwritten in beautiful calligraphic script, states: \u201cPhotographs taken by Lt. Col.
