Post Contributed by Mattison Bond, Movement History Initiative Coordinator
The Movement History Initiative is proud to announce its first-ever Visiting Fellowship for Artists and Creatives! This is a new opportunity to bring artists and creators into direct contact with the archive, while allowing them to learn more about the history of SNCC and grassroots organizing!
The creation of art and the use of cultural organizing were central to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee’s organizing methods. In that same spirit, the MHI Visiting Fellowship invites artists and creatives to immerse themselves in this history and draw on the archive’s materials to fuel their own work.
Two fellows will be selected to travel to the John Hope Franklin Research Center at Duke University and explore the Legacy of SNCC Collections in person. The fellowship provides up to $3,000 total, a $1,000 honorarium and a $2,000 travel stipend, with visits taking place between November 1, 2026, and February 28, 2027. Awardees will also participate in a public program in February 2027, sharing their work with the MHI community.
Applications are due October 9, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
