Last week a rather strange and amusing item came in for rehousing, prompting me to do a little research about its origin. This satirical\u00a0engraving\u00a0by Stephen College, fittingly titled Strange’s Case, Strangely Altered<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0was printed\u00a0in 1680. The dog represents\u00a0Robert L’Estrange<\/a>, an English pamphleteer, fleeing the\u00a0gallows from his alleged involvement\u00a0in\u00a0the “Popish Plot<\/a>“. “Crack-Fart” is one of the many names\u00a0given to L’Estrange.\u00a0 The British Museum has digitized their copy<\/a>, which includes extensive contemporary annotations\u00a0on the characters involved. Ironically, the printer<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0hanged and quartered for sedition a year later, while L’Estrange returned and was knighted\u00a0in 1685<\/a>\u00a0for helping to discredit the plot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
