This satirical\u00a0engraving\u00a0by Stephen College, fittingly titled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/search.library.duke.edu\/search?id=DUKE003824460\" target=\"_blank\">Strange&#8217;s Case, Strangely Altered<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0was printed\u00a0in 1680. The dog represents\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roger_L%27Estrange\" target=\"_blank\">Robert L&#8217;Estrange<\/a>, an English pamphleteer, fleeing the\u00a0gallows from his alleged involvement\u00a0in\u00a0the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Popish_Plot\" target=\"_blank\">Popish Plot<\/a>&#8220;. &#8220;Crack-Fart&#8221; is one of the many names\u00a0given to L&#8217;Estrange.\u00a0 The British Museum has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/research\/collection_online\/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=1525073&amp;partId=1\" target=\"_blank\">digitized their copy<\/a>, which includes extensive contemporary annotations\u00a0on the characters involved. Ironically, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_College\" target=\"_blank\">the printer<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0hanged and quartered for sedition a year later, while L&#8217;Estrange returned and was<a href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Roger-LEstrange\" target=\"_blank\"> knighted\u00a0in 1685<\/a>\u00a0for helping to discredit the plot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week a rather strange and amusing item came in for rehousing, prompting me to do a little research about its origin.
