I just finished repairing\u00a0Bartisch&#8217;s <em>Ophthalmodouleia, das\u00a0ist Augendienst:&#8230;,<\/em> a work on\u00a0Ophthalmology printed in 1583.<\/p>\n<p>This item was recently featured in the exhibit, <a href=\"http:\/\/exhibits.library.duke.edu\/exhibits\/show\/anatomy\">Anamated<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/exhibits.library.duke.edu\/exhibits\/show\/anatomy\"> Anatomies.<\/a> In addition to depicting some interesting and seemingly painful eye treatments and\u00a0surgeries of the 16th century, the book contains two pages of hand-colored anatomical flaps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/preservation\/files\/2011\/11\/201112_019_at06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/preservation\/files\/2011\/11\/201112_019_at06-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>I repaired a page that depicts the\u00a0anatomy of the eye in layers. Like many of the flap books we have examined, the flaps were fragile and showed signs of\u00a0damage from use. The eyeball flaps had received several previous repairs, including a fairly early shellac seal repair.<\/p>\n<p>For this treatment, I removed one of the previous repairs that was poorly placed and causing damage to the outer flap, and I re-repaired it using tissue and wheat starch paste.
