{"id":1065,"date":"2011-07-08T10:01:09","date_gmt":"2011-07-08T14:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/preservation\/?p=1065"},"modified":"2011-07-08T10:01:09","modified_gmt":"2011-07-08T14:01:09","slug":"50000-and-climbing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/preservation\/2011\/07\/08\/50000-and-climbing\/","title":{"rendered":"50,000 And Climbing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/imageserver.lib.duke.edu\/dc\/images\/static\/eaa\/med\/A0635-01.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"347\" \/> It&#8217;s the end of the fiscal year and you know what that means&#8230;<strong>it&#8217;s statistics season! <\/strong>I&#8217;ve just finished compiling our FY2010-2011 stats and will now be subjecting them to feats of interpretation and contemplation.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Since FY2003 we have repaired and bound over <strong>50,000 <\/strong>books and pamphlets; we have also made over <strong>51,000<\/strong> custom enclosures.<\/li>\n<li>Last year we made <strong>8,538 enclosures<\/strong> thanks in large part to the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/preservation\/2011\/02\/19\/building-the-broadside-digital-collection\/\">broadside project <\/a>and the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.duke.edu\/specialcollections\/history-of-medicine\/\">History of Medicine<\/a> project.<\/li>\n<li>In FY2011, 57.7% of our work came from the <a href=\"http:\/\/library.duke.edu\/\">Perkins Library system <\/a>and 42.3% from <a href=\"http:\/\/library.duke.edu\/specialcollections\/\">Special Collections and Archives<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>About 78% of our output for the general collections last year was &#8220;shelf preparation&#8221; work\u00a0 including pamphlet binding, CoLibri covers, and pockets for books with CD&#8217;s.<\/li>\n<li>90% of our output for special collections last year fits into the category of protective enclosures [see bullet #2 above].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I could go on and on, I love statistics as my staff will attest. What do these numbers mean? Several things which will become more apparent as I delve deeper into the meaning behind these numbers.
