These awards include the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/research\/awards\/aptman\">Lowell Aptman Prizes<\/a>, for use of the general library collections and services; the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/research\/awards\/holsti\">Ole R. Holsti Prize<\/a>, for excellence in the field of political science and public policy research; the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/research\/awards\/middlesworth\">Chester P. Middlesworth Award<\/a>, for research using the primary sources and rare materials held in the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book &amp; Manuscript Library; and the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/research\/awards\/rosati\">Rudolph William Rosati Creative Writing Award<\/a>, for an outstanding work of creative writing. Winners of these awards receive cash prizes of $1,000 or $1,500 as well as recognition at a reception during Duke\u2019s Family Weekend. This year we wanted to highlight a few of our winners and ask what they planned to do with their winnings.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8063\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8063\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8063 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Jessica-for-blog-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Jessica-for-blog-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Jessica-for-blog-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Jessica-for-blog.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jessica Chen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Jessica Chen<\/strong>, a winner of the Lowell Aptman Prize, had a central research question, asking how different communities that face barriers from higher housing rates in the Lower East Side of New York intersect, and how one represents that intersection in art. As an art history major, Jessica was able to further her studies by visiting art galleries in New York that represent these communities. Her research confronting the history of ghettos in New York also allowed her to explore different fields of study \u2013 such as urban policy \u2013 while reading historical 1920s newspapers provided by the library. Her research resulted in her paper \u201cPost-Modern Folk Chronicler.\u201d Jessica says that she plans to use the prize money to \u201cfinally organize [her] life by buying an iPad and Apple pen for note-taking.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8056\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8056\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8056\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Blaire-for-blog-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Blaire-for-blog-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Blaire-for-blog.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8056\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blaire Zhang (right) with librarian Arianne Hartsell-Gundy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Blaire Zhang <\/strong>might not fit the profile of the typical student who wins the William Rosati Creative Writing Award. She\u2019s a computer science major. Her paper, \u201cSapiens,\u201d was actually the first creative writing assignment she ever had at Duke, and she managed to have it recognized as one of the top creative writing assignments out of all the undergraduates last semester. The intersection of Blaire\u2019s abilities won\u2019t stop with this award, however. She plans to use the prize money in order to create a digital visualization of her writing.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8062\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8062\" style=\"width: 241px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8062 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Jack-for-blog-e1580829183825-241x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Jack-for-blog-e1580829183825-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Jack-for-blog-e1580829183825.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jack Bradford (right) with Professor of English Tom Ferraro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Jack Bradford<\/strong> received the Lowell Aptman prize for his honors thesis, \u201cErrand into the Water Closet: Scat and the Making of the American Modernist Novel.\u201d Jack dug his nose into the portrayal of feces in six different novels from the 1920s-1930s. He explains that one can use scatology to view race, gender, and religion throughout these novels. \u201cThe modernist novel became the vehicle through which I synthesized an eclectic bibliographical dung heap into a systematic theoretical paradigm,\u201d he quipped.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8069\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8069\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8069\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Valerie-for-blog-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Valerie-for-blog-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Valerie-for-blog-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/magazine\/files\/2020\/02\/Valerie-for-blog.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Valerie Muensterman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Valerie Muensterman\u2019s<\/strong> name might sound familiar. This is now Valerie\u2019s <em>third<\/em> time to be a recipient of our Rosati Award. Valerie, who studies English and Theater Studies, is a playwright. Last year, when she won for a collection of plays, she told us that she hoped the prize money would provide the opportunity to explore her passion. And that she did! But this time she used her skills to write \u201cDid You Forget Your Name?\u201d a screenplay about a stuttering female protagonist, borrowing from the experiences of her older sister. She uses the protagonist to bring forward her central theme: waiting.
