The William F. Eisner Museum of Advertising & Design is an interactive educational center focusing on advertising and design, and their impact on our culture. The library houses a collection of books, pamphlets, trade catalogs, manuscripts, photographs, ephemera, and audiovisual materials documenting the history of American business and technology. It’s main strength is in the Middle Atlantic region, but the scope of collecting includes business organizations and companies with national and international impact.

The HAT collection documents British advertising, marketing, media, and public relations from 1800 to the present, with a supporting library of books and periodicals. The Archives contains print, television, cinema and radio ads; advertising proofs and artwork; storyboards; artifacts; campaign memoranda and research material. The earliest collection is the archive of RF White (c. 1800), the UK’s first advertising agency. The most recent material is last month’s TV commercials, which come into HAT on a regular basis. HAT is archivist to the Advertising Association and other organizations, including the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers, the Direct Mail Association, the Periodical Publishers Association, the Institute of Public Relations, the Women’s Advertising Club of London and the Cinema Advertising Association. Other collections include those of National Dairy Council, H P Foods, Bates Dorland, SmithKline Beecham, Ogilvy & Mather, Lambie Nairn, Compaq Computer , and J. Walter Thompson Company (London Office).

The museum contains a wide array of broadcasting memorabilia, and an extensive publicly-available archives collection of more than 60,000 radio and television programs and commercials. It is home to the Radio Hall of Fame and maintains an exhibit of the Advertising Hall of Fame.

Holdings include the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana of trade cards, posters, trade catalogs, advertisements, and outdoor signs mostly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The N.W. Ayer Advertising Agency Records include business records but consist primarily of print advertising created for thousands of clients between 1869 and 1996. The Walter Landor/Landor Associates Collection and the Frances Mair Collection document their groundbreaking work in packaging design and in the development of corporate identity programs. The Maidenform and Hills Bros. Coffee collections have exceptionally complete advertising and marketing records. The Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation Records and the Carvel Ice Cream Company Records reveal the early history of prepared foods, franchising, and the role of marketing in their success. Other collections include the Breck Girls Collection; the papers of direct response pioneer John Caples and the papers of Estelle Ellis, promotions director for Seventeen and other magazines. In addition the Archives Center has documented through oral history the creation of important advertising campaigns for products such as Pepsi, Alka-Seltzer, Marlboro, Federal Express, Cover Girl, Campbell Soup, Nike and Kraft Television Theatre.

The Mass Communications History Collections (MCHC) holds the papers of hundreds of important individuals, corporations and professional organizations in the fields of journalism, broadcasting, advertising and public relations. Among the collections are the records and papers of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC); Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications; Foote, Cone & Belding, Inc. (print advertising of Lord & Thomas and Foote, Cone & Belding); National Educational Television; and many others.

The Advertising Council Archives documents the story of public service advertising since the early days of World War II. The collection contains campaign promotional materials and copies of thousands of ads in nearly all major advertising media, as well as files, board and committee minutes, publications, and campaign files that document the development of advertising campaigns and the decision-making process in the selection of campaigns and preparation of materials. Other materials related to advertising are distributed in a number of other collections in the University Archives.

The Communications Library’s collections include the D’Arcy Collection of historical advertisements, a collection of almost two million original advertisements published between 1890 and 1970. While the vast majority of these advertisements appeared in newspapers, magazines and trade journals, there are a few in other forms such as brochures, signs, and programs. Also included in the Communications Library is the Stanley F. Cohen Collection of clippings and documents related to his tenure as Washington editor of Advertising Age. In addition the Library contains over 15,000 volumes of books, journals, and materials in other formats, on advertising, journalism, radio and television broadcasting, telecommunications, media studies, popular culture, polling and public opinion.
