to do this, right click your newly created toolbox and select New, then Model.\u00a0 When you wish to open an existing ModelBuilder, find your toolbox, right click your Model and select Edit.<\/p>\n<p>In order to find the results of your model and the data created in the middle of your project workflow (also known as <a href=\"http:\/\/resources.arcgis.com\/en\/help\/main\/10.2\/index.html#\/\/002w0000000z000000\">intermediate data<\/a>), you will need to direct the data to any workspace or a Scratch Geodatabase.\u00a0 To set your data results to a Scratch Geodatabase in ModelBuilder, click Model, then Model Properties.\u00a0 A dialog box will open and you will want to select the Environments tab, Workspace category, and check Scratch Workspace.\u00a0 Before closing the dialog box, select \u201cValues\u201d and navigate to your workspace or your geodatabase.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/Set_Workspace.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1758 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/Set_Workspace.png\" alt=\"Set_Workspace\" width=\"1111\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/Set_Workspace.png 1111w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/Set_Workspace-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/Set_Workspace-1024x507.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1111px) 100vw, 1111px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Building and Running a Model<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To create a model, click the Add Data or Tool button (<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/AddData.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1763\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/AddData.jpg\" alt=\"AddData\" width=\"29\" height=\"23\" \/><\/a>).\u00a0 Navigate to the SystemToolboxes, find the tool you wish to run, and add it to your model.\u00a0 Double click the tool within the Model and its parameters will open.\u00a0 Fill out the appropriate fields for the tool and select OK.<\/p>\n<p>When the tools or variables are ready for processing, they will be colored blue, green, or yellow.\u00a0 Blue variables are inputs, yellow variables are tools, and green variables are outputs.\u00a0 When there is an error or the parameters have not been chosen, the variables will have no color.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/ModelBlog_Good.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1765\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/ModelBlog_Good.jpg\" alt=\"ModelBlog_Good\" width=\"893\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/ModelBlog_Good.jpg 893w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/ModelBlog_Good-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 893px) 100vw, 893px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once you have your model built, click the <a href=\"http:\/\/resources.arcgis.com\/en\/help\/main\/10.2\/index.html#\/Running_models\/002w0000005m000000\/\">Run <\/a>icon (<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/MBRun.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1767 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/MBRun.png\" alt=\"MBRun\" width=\"16\" height=\"22\" \/><\/a>) to run the model.\u00a0 Depending on the data and the amount of tools you run, the Model can take seconds or minutes to run.\u00a0 You can also run one tool at a time; to do this, right click the tool and select \u201cRun.\u201d\u00a0 When the Model is done running, the tools and outputs will have a gray background.\u00a0 To find the results of your model, navigate to the Scratch Workspace you have set and add the shapefile or table to ArcMap or right-click the output variable before running the model and select <a href=\"http:\/\/resources.arcgis.com\/en\/help\/main\/10.1\/index.html#\/Displaying_model_data\/002w0000003q000000\/\">\u201cAdd to Display.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Applying ModelBuilder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The model above demonstrates how to take nationwide county data, North Carolina landmark data and North Carolina major roads data and find landmarks in Wake County that are within 1 mile of major roads.\u00a0 The first tool in the model (<a href=\"http:\/\/resources.arcgis.com\/en\/help\/main\/10.2\/index.html#\/\/001700000071000000\">Select Layer by Attribute tool<\/a>)\u00a0extracts Wake County from the nationwide counties polygon layer. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1768 size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/1-300x90.png\" alt=\"1\" width=\"300\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/1-300x90.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/1-1024x307.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/1.png 1700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once Wake County is extracted to a new layer, the North Carolina landmarks layer is clipped to the Wake County layer using the<a href=\"http:\/\/resources.arcgis.com\/en\/help\/main\/10.2\/index.html#\/\/000800000004000000\"> Clip tool<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-thumbnail wp-image-1769 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/2-150x150.png\" alt=\"2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0The result of this tool creates a landmarks point layer in Wake County.\u00a0 The third tool uses the <a href=\"http:\/\/resources.arcgis.com\/en\/help\/main\/10.2\/index.html#\/\/000800000019000000\">Buffer tool <\/a>on the primary roads layer in North Carolina.\u00a0 Within the Buffer tool parameters, a distance of 1 mile is chosen and a new polygon layer is created.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the Wake County landmarks layer is intersected with the buffered major roads layer to create a final output using the <a href=\"http:\/\/resources.arcgis.com\/en\/help\/main\/10.2\/index.html#\/\/00080000000p000000\">Interect tool<\/a>.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1770 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/4-300x108.png\" alt=\"4\" width=\"300\" height=\"108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/4-300x108.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/4-1024x369.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/data\/files\/2015\/04\/4.png 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0Using ModelBuilder has many benefits: you document the steps you used to create your project and you can easily rerun the tool with different inputs after the model is built.\u00a0 ModelBuilder allows users to easily determine if and where problems in the workflow are.\u00a0 When there is an error in the workflow, a \u201cFailed to Execute\u201d message will appear and tell users which tool was unable to execute.\u00a0 ModelBuilder also lets users easily change parameters.\u00a0 In the model used above, you could change the Expression in the Select Layer\u00a0by Attribute tool from \u2018Wake\u2019 to \u2018Durham\u2019 and find landmarks within 1 mile of major roads in Durham County.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ever have trouble conceptualizing your project workflow?\u00a0 ModelBuilder\u00a0 allows you to plan your project before you run any tools.\u00a0 When using ModelBuilder in ESRI&#8217;s ArcMap, you create a workflow of your project by adding the data and tools you need.\u00a0 To open ModelBuilder, click the ModelBuilder icon\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0() in the Standard Toolbar.
