{"id":7172,"date":"2019-08-16T15:30:43","date_gmt":"2019-08-16T19:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/?p=7172"},"modified":"2019-08-16T15:32:07","modified_gmt":"2019-08-16T19:32:07","slug":"approaches-toward-managing-problematic-metadata","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/2019\/08\/16\/approaches-toward-managing-problematic-metadata\/","title":{"rendered":"Managing Problematic Metadata"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April 2018 I attended an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niso.org\/events\/2018\/04\/can-there-be-neutrality-cataloging-conversation-starter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excellent NISO webinar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> entitled \u201cCan there be neutrality in cataloging?\u201d. Initially this struck me as a somewhat quaint title, as though there could be any answer other than \u2018no\u2019. Happily, the webinar came to pretty much the same conclusion, and I think it\u2019s fair to say that at this point in time there is a broad understanding in the metadata and cataloging community that libraries are not neutral spaces, and therefore, neither is the description we create, manage, store, and display.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes intentionality and cultural humility to do descriptive work in a way that respects the diversity of our society and multitudinous perspectives of our patrons. I think we\u2019re now in a moment where practitioners are recognizing the importance of approaching our work with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) values in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we must also reckon with the fact that there hasn\u2019t always this kind of focus on inclusivity in regards to our descriptive practices, and so we are left with the task of deciding how best to manage existing metadata and legacy practices that don\u2019t reflect our values as librarians and archivists. So, we have to figure out how to appropriately \u201cdecolonize\u201d our description.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past few years I\u2019ve encountered a number of ideas and initiatives aimed at addressing this issue by both reexamining and remediating existing metadata as well as updating and improving descriptive practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Institutional work &amp; messaging<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can leverage our institutional structures.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of Alberta formed a \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/librarytoolshed.ca\/content\/decolonizing-description-changing-metadata-response-truth-reconciliation-commission\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decolonizing Description Working Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 to investigate, document, and propose a plan for more accurately and respectfully representing Indigenous peoples and contexts through descriptive practices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temple University\u2019s Special Collections Research Center website hosts a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/scrc\/research\/harmful-language\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement on potentially harmful language in archival description and cataloging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Activism<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can participate in activism to make broad changes.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students and librarians at Dartmouth University worked together to lobby the Library of Congress to stop using the term \u2018illegal aliens\u2019 to describe undocumented immigrants. The documentary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.dartmouth.edu\/changethesubject\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Change the Subject!\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes their campaign.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Programmatic Analysis<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can develop tools and techniques for analyzing our existing metadata.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noah Geraci, a librarian at the University of California Riverside, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/osf.io\/9uehx\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">presented at Code4Lib 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on their project to identify problematic metadata and remediate it programmatically.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Implement Inclusive Vocabulary and Thesauri<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can identify and implement inclusive alternative vocabulary and thesauri in our systems.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the Hyrax project, developers and stakeholders have identified vocabularies and thesauri that are more inclusive and representative, listed here in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1K8ZxlBAZBdX12KhyweiPATUKJ2Url_Vudhhom_5dCr8\/edit#gid=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spreadsheet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> managed by Julie Hardesty.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>Develop technical solutions<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can develop technical solutions for managing the presence of problematic metadata in our systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And here\u2019s something we\u2019re working on locally! As part of TRLN Discovery (a recent and successful project to develop a shared Blacklight discovery interface for the Triangle Research Libraries Network consortium) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1utcphRBKOqGBS8_qT1pCLb-hsutqux5LLB7d2aDp9uk\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developers incorporated code for re-mapping problematic subject headings to preferred terms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Problematic terms may still be searched, but only the preferred term will display in the record. We\u2019re still working out how to implement this tool however, from a policy standpoint, e.g., who decides what is \u2018problematic\u2019, and how should those decisions be communicated across our organizations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is but a smattering out of many projects and ideas metadata practitioners are engaged in. Eradicating inaccurate, insensitive, and potentially harmful description from our library systems is a heavy and entrenched problem to tackle, but lots of smart folks are on it.
