{"id":6830,"date":"2019-04-11T16:17:24","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T20:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/?p=6830"},"modified":"2019-05-02T15:47:29","modified_gmt":"2019-05-02T19:47:29","slug":"smart-people-who-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/2019\/04\/11\/smart-people-who-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Smart People Who Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s that time of year at the university when we\u2019re working on our PEPs (Performance Evaluation and Planning forms) and I\u2019m thinking about how grateful I am to have such smart staff who really care about their work, their colleagues, and the people they serve, as we advance technology across the libraries. In contrast to some corporate environments, the process here really does aim to help us improve, rather than rank us as a setup for \u201cresource actions\u201d (firings). This excellent article, <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/03\/the-feedback-fallacy?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter_monthly&amp;utm_campaign=leadership_not_activesubs&amp;referral=00206&amp;deliveryName=DM29548\">The Feedback Fallacy<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/high5test.com\/marcus-buckingham-biography\/\">Marcus Buckingham<\/a> and Ashley Goodall, reminds me to emphasize the things people do well, and encourage them to build on their strengths.<\/p>\n<p>Attuned to ethical practices within organizations, I\u2019m also excited about increasing awareness of ethics in the effects of the technologies we produce. Justin Sherman, co-founder of the<a href=\"https:\/\/ethicaltech.duke.edu\/\"> Ethical Tech\u00a0<\/a>initiative here at Duke, did a stimulating talk at the <a href=\"http:\/\/calendar.duke.edu\/index?lf%5B%5D=Bostock+Library+-+The+Edge+Workshop+Room\">Edge Workshop<\/a> this month about ethical issues that surround technology, such as search engine bias, and AI tools that judges use to determine sentencing for crimes.\u00a0 Justin recommends this podcast, with Christopher Lydon on Open Source, called <a href=\"http:\/\/radioopensource.org\/real-education-artificial-intelligence\/\">Real Education About Artificial Intelligence<\/a>.\u00a0 Library staff are participating in the <a href=\"https:\/\/kenan.ethics.duke.edu\/ethics-book-clubs-catching-on-across-campus\/\">Kenan Institute for Ethics book club program (KIE)<\/a>, where the spring selection is <a href=\"https:\/\/nyupress.org\/9781479837243\/\">Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism<\/a> by Safiya Umoja Noble.<\/p>\n<p>And, I&#8217;m pleased to exercise my hiring mantra, \u201csmart people who care\u201d, which has served me well for over 30 years, as we\u2019re recruiting candidates with I\/T and team leadership experience for a new position, <a href=\"https:\/\/library.duke.edu\/about\/jobs\/computingservices\">Computing Services Supervisor.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Happy Spring!<br \/>\nLaura Cappelletti<br \/>\nDirector, Information Technology Services<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s that time of year at the university when we\u2019re working on our PEPs (Performance Evaluation and Planning forms) and I\u2019m thinking about how grateful I am to have such smart staff who really care about their work, their colleagues, and the people they serve, as we advance technology across the libraries.
