{"id":6495,"date":"2018-10-19T13:37:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-19T17:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/?p=6495"},"modified":"2018-10-19T13:37:00","modified_gmt":"2018-10-19T17:37:00","slug":"smtl-dul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/2018\/10\/19\/smtl-dul\/","title":{"rendered":"SMTL @ DUL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my first six weeks at DUL (Duke University Libraries), I\u2019m deciphering acronyms, even beyond those I absorbed at IBM, Toshiba, and LexisNexis, which is to say, a whole new lexicon.<\/p>\n<p>Within the DST (Digital Strategies and Technology) organization, my ITS (Information Technology Services) team consists of three departments, located in the PBR complex (Perkins Bostock Rubenstein, not Pabst Blue Ribbon).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Core Services supports &gt; 100 tools and platforms, deploys and maintains &gt; 600 systems and workstations, and sets up all the specialized equipment you see throughout the libraries<\/li>\n<li>Software Services develops state of the art applications such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.repository.duke.edu\/\">RDR (Research Data Repository)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>LSIS (Library Systems &amp; Integration Support) is preparing for the evolution to a new LSP (Library Services Platform) called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.folio.org\/\">FOLIO<\/a>  in collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openlibraryfoundation.org\/\">OLF<\/a> (Open Library Foundation), Index Data, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebsco.com\/products\/research-databases\">EBSCO<\/a> (Elton B. Stephens Co.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We work in conjunction with Duke\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/oit.duke.edu\/\">OIT<\/a> (Office of Information Technology), and with many external organizations, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/sparcopen.org\/\">SPARC<\/a> (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), <a href=\"https:\/\/openlibraryenvironment.org\/\">OLE<\/a> (Open Library Environment), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oclc.org\/en\/home.html\">OCLC<\/a> (Online Computer Library Center), ABCDEFG (no, I\u2019m getting carried away\u2026).<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the commercial sector, we\u2019re intent on collaboration rather than competition. I\u2019m excited to be a part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trln.org\/\">TRLN<\/a> (Triangle Research Library Network), and the Ivy Plus Libraries partnership of 13 leading academic libraries who sponsor the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.borrowdirect.org\/\">BorrowDirect<\/a> initiative.<\/p>\n<p>This is such a fun place to work! We have a staff yoga class given by Lindsey Crawford of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalbreath.org\/\">Global Breath Studio<\/a>, and I figured out how to use the<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/meescan\/id1268480303\"> meescan<\/a> app , to check out an actual book, from which I learned from <a href=\"https:\/\/smittenkitchen.com\/\">Smitten Kitchen<\/a> that chaat masala is great on popcorn.
