{"id":5303,"date":"2017-10-13T16:26:48","date_gmt":"2017-10-13T20:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/?p=5303"},"modified":"2017-10-13T16:30:04","modified_gmt":"2017-10-13T20:30:04","slug":"william-gedney-connect-photographs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/2017\/10\/13\/william-gedney-connect-photographs\/","title":{"rendered":"William Gedney: Connect to the photographs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back, I wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/2015\/11\/13\/william-gedney-wants-me-to-build-a-darkroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a> about my enjoyment in digitizing the <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.duke.edu\/dc\/gedney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Gedney Photograph collection<\/a> and how it was inspiring me to build a darkroom in my garage.\u00a0 I wish I could say that the darkroom is up and running but so far all I\u2019ve installed is the sink.\u00a0 However, as Molly announced in her last <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/2017\/10\/06\/new-recently-migrated-digital-collections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitstreams post<\/a>, we have launched the Gedney collection which includes series two series that are complete (Finished Prints and Contact Sheets) and more to come.<\/p>\n<p>The newly launched site brings together this amazing body of work in a seamless way. The site allows you to browse the collection, use the search box to find something specific or use the facets to filter by series, location, subject, year and format.\u00a0 If that isn\u2019t enough, we have not only related prints from the same contact sheet but also related prints of the same image.\u00a0 For example, you can browse the collection and click on an <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.duke.edu\/dc\/gedney\/gedst001001002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">image of Virgil Thomson<\/a>, an American composer, smoothly zoom in and out of the image, then scroll to the bottom of the page to find a thumbnail of the contact sheet from which the negative comes.\u00a0 When you click through the thumbnial you can zoom into the contact sheet and see additional shots that Gedney took.\u00a0 You even can see which frames he highlighted for closer inspection. If you scroll to the bottom of this contact sheet page you will find that 2 of those highlighted frames have corresponding finished prints.\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 I am telling you, checkout the <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.duke.edu\/dc\/gedney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">site<\/a>, it is super cool!<\/p>\n<p>What you do not see [yet], because I am in the middle of digitizing this series, is all of the proof prints Gedney produced of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgil_Thomson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virgil Thomson<\/a>, 36 in all.\u00a0 Here are a
