{"id":3966,"date":"2016-07-01T11:34:44","date_gmt":"2016-07-01T15:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/?p=3966"},"modified":"2016-07-01T14:38:48","modified_gmt":"2016-07-01T18:38:48","slug":"repository-mega-migration-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/2016\/07\/01\/repository-mega-migration-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Repository Mega-Migration Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are shouting it from the roof tops: The <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/2016\/04\/29\/preservation-architecture-phase-2-moving-forward-duke-digital-repository\/\">migration<\/a> from Fedora 3 to Fedora 4 is complete!\u00a0 And Digital Repository Services are <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/2016\/05\/27\/hang-migration-coming\/\">not the only ones<\/a> relieved.\u00a0 We appreciate the understanding that our\u00a0colleagues and users have shown as they&#8217;ve been inconvenienced while we&#8217;ve built a more resilient, more durable, more sustainable preservation platform in which to store and share our digital assets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/07\/shouting_from_the_rooftops.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4061 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/07\/shouting_from_the_rooftops-300x239.jpg\" alt=\"shouting_from_the_rooftops\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/07\/shouting_from_the_rooftops-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/07\/shouting_from_the_rooftops.jpg 326w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We began the migration of data from Fedora 3 on Monday, May 23rd.\u00a0 In this time we&#8217;ve migrated roughly 337,000 objects in the Duke Digital Repository. \u00a0The data migration was split into several phases. \u00a0In case you&#8217;re interested, here are the details:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Collections were\u00a0identified for migration beginning with unpublished collections, which comprise about 70% of the materials in the repository<\/li>\n<li>Collections to be migrated were\u00a0locked for editing in the Fedora 3 repository to prevent changes that inadvertently won&#8217;t be migrated to the new repository<\/li>\n<li>Collections to be migrated were\u00a0passed to 10 migration processors for actual ingest into Fedora 4\n<ul>\n<li>Objects were\u00a0migrated first.\u00a0 This includes the collection object, content objects, item objects, color targets for digital imaging, and attachments (objects related to, but not part of, a collection like deposit agreements<\/li>\n<li>Then relationships between objects were\u00a0migrated<\/li>\n<li>Last, metadata was migrated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Collections were then\u00a0validated in Fedora 4<\/li>\n<li>When validation is complete, collections will be unlocked for editing in Fedora 4<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Presto! \u00a0Voila! \u00a0That&#8217;s it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/07\/MV5BMTEwNjMwMjc3MDdeQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU4MDg0OTA4MDIx._V1_UX182_CR00182268_AL_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4060 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/07\/MV5BMTEwNjMwMjc3MDdeQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU4MDg0OTA4MDIx._V1_UX182_CR00182268_AL_.jpg\" alt=\"MV5BMTEwNjMwMjc3MDdeQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU4MDg0OTA4MDIx._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_\" width=\"182\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While our <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/duke-libraries\/fedora-migrate\">customized version<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/projecthydra-labs\/fedora-migrate\">Fedora migrate gem<\/a> does some validation of migrated content, we&#8217;ve elected to build an independent process to provide validation.\u00a0 Some of the validation is straightforward such as comparing checksums of Fedora 3 files against those in Fedora 4.\u00a0 In other cases, being confident that we&#8217;ve migrated everything accurately can be much more difficult.
