{"id":3843,"date":"2016-04-29T15:05:13","date_gmt":"2016-04-29T19:05:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/?p=3843"},"modified":"2016-04-29T15:05:13","modified_gmt":"2016-04-29T19:05:13","slug":"preservation-architecture-phase-2-moving-forward-duke-digital-repository","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/2016\/04\/29\/preservation-architecture-phase-2-moving-forward-duke-digital-repository\/","title":{"rendered":"Preservation Architecture: Phase 2 \u2013 Moving Forward with Duke Digital Repository"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3844\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/04\/dukespace.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3844\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3844\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/04\/dukespace-300x103.png\" alt=\"DukeSpace circa 2013\" width=\"300\" height=\"103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/04\/dukespace-300x103.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/04\/dukespace-768x265.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/04\/dukespace-1024x353.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/files\/2016\/04\/dukespace.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DukeSpace circa 2013<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.80, President Obama was inaugurated for a second term, and Duke University Libraries offered DukeSpace as an institutional repository.\u00a0 Some things haven&#8217;t changed much, but the preservation architecture protecting the digital materials curated by the Libraries has changed a lot!<\/p>\n<p>We still provide <a href=\"http:\/\/dukespace.lib.duke.edu\/dspace\/\">DukeSpace<\/a>, but are laying the foundation to migrate collections and processes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.lib.duke.edu\/\">Duke Digital Repository<\/a> (DDR).\u00a0 The DDR was conceived of and developed as a digital preservation repository, an environment intended to preserve and sustain the rich digital collections; university scholarship and research data; purchased collections, and history of Duke far into the future.\u00a0 Only through the grace of our <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/bitstreams\/2015\/10\/22\/today-is-the-new-future-tripod3\/\">partnership<\/a> with Digital Projects and Production Services has the DDR recently also become a site that no longer hurts the eyes of our visitors.<\/p>\n<p>The Duke Digital Repository endeavors to protect our assets from a large and diverse threat model. There are threats that are not addressed in the systems model presented here, such as those identified in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dlib.org\/dlib\/september12\/vermaaten\/09vermaaten.html\">SPOT Model for Risk Assessment<\/a>, of course. We formally consider these baseline threats to include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Natural disasters including accidents at our local nuclear power station, fire, and hurricanes<\/li>\n<li>Data degradation also known as bit rot or bit decay<\/li>\n<li>External actors or threats posed by people external to the DDR team including those who manage our infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>Internal actors including intentional or unintentional security risks and exploits by privileged staff in the libraries and supporting IT organizations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Phase 1 of our ingress into digital preservation established that DSpace, the software powering DukeSpace, was not sufficient for our needs, which led to an environmental scan and pilot project with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fedora-commons.org\/\">Fedora<\/a> and then Fedora and <a href=\"https:\/\/projecthydra.org\/\">Hydra<\/a>. This provided us with some of the infrastructure to mitigate the threats we had identified, but not all.\u00a0 In Phase 1 we were to perform some important preservation tasks including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prove authenticity by offering <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Checksum\">checksum<\/a> fixity validation on ingest and periodically<\/li>\n<li>Identify and report on data degradation<\/li>\n<li>Capture context in the form of descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata<\/li>\n<li>Identify files in need of remediation using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imaging.org\/ist\/publications\/reporter\/articles\/Rep22_4_Arch2007_CHOU.pdf\">file characterization<\/a> tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Phase 2 allows us to address a greater range of threats and therefore offer a higher level of security to our collections.\u00a0 In Phase 2 we&#8217;re doing several concurrent migrations including migrating our archival storage to infrastructure that will allow for dynamic resizing, de-duplication, and block-level integrity checking; moving to a horizontally scaled server architecture to allow the repository to grow to meet increasing demands of size (individual file size and size of collection) and traffic; and adopting a cloud replication disaster recovery process using <a href=\"http:\/\/duracloud.org\/\">DuraCloud<\/a> to replace our local-only disk\/tape infrastructure.\u00a0 These changes provide significant protection against our baseline threat model by providing geographic diversity to our replicas, allowing us to constantly monitor the health of our 3 cloud replicas, and providing administrative diversity to the management of our replicas ensuring no single threat may corrupt all 4 copies of our data.<\/p>\n<p>More detail about the repository architecture to come.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; In 2013, the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.80, President Obama was inaugurated for a second term, and Duke University Libraries offered DukeSpace as an institutional repository.\u00a0 Some things haven&#8217;t changed much, but the preservation architecture protecting the digital materials curated by the Libraries has changed a lot!
