The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diglib.org\/forums\/2014forum\/program\/\">program<\/a> was packed to the gills with outstanding projects and presenters, and several of us from Duke University Libraries were fortunate enough to attend. \u00a0Below is a round up of notes summarizing\u00a0interesting sessions, software tools, projects and collections we learned about at the conference.<\/p>\n<p><em>Please note that these notes were written by humans listening to presentations and mistakes are inevitable. \u00a0Click the links to learn more about each tool\/project or session straight from the source.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tools and Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Spotlight<em>\u00a0<\/em>is an open-source tool for featuring digitized resources and is being developed at Stanford University. \u00a0It appears to have fairly similar functionality to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/omeka.org\/\">Omeka<\/a>, but is integrated into Blacklight, a discovery interface used by a growing number of libraries.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/sul-dlss\/spotlight\">https:\/\/github.com\/sul-dlss\/spotlight<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/library.stanford.edu\/blogs\/digital-library-blog\/2014\/06\/stanford-university-libraries-completes-first-phase-development\">http:\/\/library.stanford.edu\/blogs\/digital-library-blog\/2014\/06\/stanford-university-libraries-completes-first-phase-development<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.utah.edu\/\">J. Williard Marriott Library at the University of Utah<\/a> presented on their use of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pamco-imaging.com\/\">Pamco Imaging<\/a> tools to capture 360 degree images of artifacts. \u00a0The library purchased a system from Pamco that includes an automated turntable, lighting tent and software to both capture and display the 3-D objects.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here is a link to an overview of their process:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lUfohvRyZfU&amp;feature=youtu.b\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lUfohvRyZfU&amp;feature=youtu.be<\/a><\/li>\n<li>An\u00a0example of the final product: \u00a0<a href=\"content.lib.utah.edu\/custom\/turntable\/_SpinHat\/index.htm\">content.lib.utah.edu\/custom\/turntable\/_SpinHat\/index.htm<\/a> (use your cursor to spin the hat to the left and right)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There were two short presentations about media walls; one from our friends in Raleigh at the Hunt Library at N.C. State University, and the second from Georgia State. \u00a0Click the links to see just how much you can do with an amazing media wall.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>N.C. State&#8217;s slides: \u00a0<a href=\"go.ncsu.edu\/dlf2014\">go.ncsu.edu\/dlf2014<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Georgia State&#8217;s CURVE:\u00a0<a href=\"bit.ly\/curvegsu\">bit.ly\/curvegsu<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Projects and Collections<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdlib.org\/\">California Digital Library<\/a>\u00a0(CDL) is redesigning and reengineering their digital collections interface to create a kind of mini-<a href=\"http:\/\/dp.la\/\">Digital Public Library of America<\/a> just for University of California digital collections. \u00a0They are designing the project using a platform\u00a0called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuxeo.com\/\">Nuxeo<\/a> and storing\u00a0their data through Amazon web services. \u00a0The\u00a0new interface and platform development is highly informed by user studies done on\u00a0the existing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calisphere.universityofcalifornia.edu\/\">Calisphere<\/a> digital collections interface.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Project Wiki: \u00a0<a href=\"bit.ly\/UCLDC\">bit.ly\/UCLDC<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/emblematica.library.illinois.edu\/\">Emblematica Online<\/a> is\u00a0a collection of\u00a0\u00a0digitized\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emblem_book\">emblem books<\/a> contributed by several global\u00a0institutions including Duke. The collection is hosted by University of Illinois at Urbana Champagne. \u00a0The project has been conducting user studies and hope to publish them in the coming year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/emblematica.library.illinois.edu\/\">http:\/\/emblematica.library.illinois.edu\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mdpi.iu.edu\/\">The University of Indiana Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative<\/a> started in 2009 with a survey of all the audio and visual materials on campus. \u00a0In 2011, the initiative proposed\u00a0digitizing\u00a0all rare and unique audio and video items within a 15 year period. However in 2013, the President of the University\u00a0said that the campus would commit to completing the project in a 7 year period. \u00a0 To accomplish this ambitious goal, the university formed a public-private partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memnon.be\/\">Memnon\u00a0Archiving Services<\/a> of Brussels. The university\u00a0estimates that they will create over 9 petabytes of data.\u00a0The initiative has been in the planning phases and should be ramping up in\u00a02015.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mdpi.iu.edu\/\">http:\/\/mdpi.iu.edu\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mdpi.iu.edu\/\">http:\/\/www.indiana.edu\/~medpres\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Selected\u00a0Session Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diglib.org\/community\/groups\/managers\/\">Project Managers group<\/a> within DLF organized a session on &#8220;Cultivating a Culture of Project Management&#8221; followed by a working lunch. Representatives from John&#8217;s Hopkins and Brown talked about implementing <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agile_software_development\">Agile Methodology<\/a> for managing and developing technical projects. \u00a0Both libraries spoke positively about moving towards Agile, and the benefits of clear communication lines and defined development cycles. \u00a0A speaker from Temple university discussed her methods for tracking and communicating the capacity of her development team; her <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1cuGbdgQ8O0XHxtcS5Rk2fvpQQITOrxZ-Eh38Ff11bl8\/edit#gid=0\">spreadsheet<\/a>\u00a0for doing so took the session by storm (I&#8217;m not exaggerating &#8211; check out Twitter around the time of this session). \u00a0 Two speakers from the University of Michigan shared their work in creating a project management special interest group within their library to share PM skills, tools and heartaches.<\/p>\n<p>A session entitled &#8220;Beyond the digital Surrogate&#8221; highlighted the work of several projects that are using digitized materials as a starting point for text mining and visualizing data. \u00a0First, many of UNC&#8217;s Documenting the American South collections are available as a text download. \u00a0Second, a tool out of Georgia Tech supports interactive exploration and visualization of text based archives. \u00a0Third, a team from University of Nebraska-Lincoln is developing methods for using visual information to leverage discovery and analysis of digital collections.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UNC&#8217;s Doc South Data: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/docsouth.unc.edu\/docsouthdata\/\">http:\/\/docsouth.unc.edu\/docsouthdata\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Georgia Tech&#8217;s TOME: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dhlab.lmc.gatech.edu\/tome\/\">http:\/\/dhlab.lmc.gatech.edu\/tome\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>UNL&#8217;s AIDA: <a href=\"http:\/\/aida.unl.edu\/\">\u00a0http:\/\/aida.unl.edu\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Assessment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving Forward with Digital Library Assessment.\u201d\u00a0<span style=\"color: #222222;\">Based around the need to strategically focus our assessment efforts in digital libraries and to better understand and measure the value, impact, and associated costs of what we do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1rLdMSPCbR_F-hE0ZhWzS70IBGEMh1450ff0x_ioPrIk\/edit?pli=1\" target=\"_blank\">Community notes for this session<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Joyce Chapman, Duke University<\/li>\n<li>Jody DeRidder, University of Alabama<\/li>\n<li>Nettie Lagace, National Information Standards Organization<\/li>\n<li>Ho Jung Yoo, University of California, San Diego<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nettie Legace: update on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niso.org\/topics\/tl\/altmetrics_initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\">NISO&#8217;s altmetrics initiativ<\/a>e.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first phase exposed areas for potential standardization. The community then collectively prioritized those potential projects, and the second phase is now developing those best practices.
