Scoop.it is a visual social bookmarking tool. You can “curate” content based on interests or themes and then share or follow others. It is a wonderful tool to gather resources for teacher productivity or classroom projects.

Pitt County Schools TechFest

I had the opportunity to attend the Pitt County, NC schools TechFest on Friday August 13th. It was an all-day technology staff development conference organized by the head of Media and Technology Services, Tim DeCresie. I attended sessions about Edmodo, Glogster, and Toondoo, as well as some Smartboard training sessions. There were over 400 teachers in attendance and from what I observed they were really excited about what they were learning. The techfest wiki includes handouts and information about some of the sessions.

Middle School Multimedia Book Reviews

Recently, I had the chance to work with one of my favorite librarians, Jenny Umbarger from Rogers-Herr Middle School. We came up with the idea to have her four library helpers create multimedia book reviews. It happened that two of her helpers are hearing impaired so we decided to make all four of the videos accessible. In a nutshell here is how we did it.
1.The students wrote the scripts and then found images that illustrated what they were talking about.
2.They created their multimedia videos using the FRAMES software from tech4learning.
3. We used Newsmaker software to create the signing videos that corresponded to the script.
4. We put it altogether in iMovie09 which has a picture-in-picture feature.

These videos have been uploaded to the District Library Automation software so anyone looking for these books can watch these videos.

A webcam and Newsmaker software make it easy

While I was attending the Florida Educational Technology conference in January I chose to attend a session on using video in the classroom. It turned out to be a vendor presentation for an inexpensive software called Newsmaker. With a webcam, a teacher can use Newsmaker to create videos with a teleprompter. There is a 30 day free download.

First you type the script. The next step brings up the live webcam and the teleprompter.

Then you can choose different effects, backgrounds and add-ons.

Once all of the choices are made just click the record button and the teleprompter begins moving. The reader can choose the speed of the teleprompter which is great for kids.

Here is an example of a first grader reading his report on the state of Arizona. Initially, he was having a hard time getting through the entire report but when he chose his new look, he breezed through it.

This year’s showcase will be bigger and better than ever. In addition to the teacher and student projects we will also have vendors that will be showcasing products and projects that we already have in Durham schools. Come and see the newest hardware,software and online resources available to teachers and students. There will be door prizes and Pepsi refreshments.

Middle Schoolers learn about the Holocaust

Ms. Moser’s 6th graders spent six weeks learning about the Holocaust. They read books, watched movies, did writing assignments. At the end they took all that they had learned and felt and wrote poetry. Once the poems were written they created multimedia projects that added even more depth and feeling.
