What a remarkable collection in its own right. Coupled with the correspondence between Eichelberger and his wife, the photographs come alive, bringing a personal view of daily life in Siberia from the perspective of an American. A jewel to be mined by scholars for both direct and interdisciplinary research.
[...] Erik Zitser, the sponsor of this digitization project, published a longer description of the Eichelberger photos in his article: Images of the Russian Civil War in Siberia in the Robert L. Eichelberger Collection at Duke Universi…. [...]
Dear Sir,
During world War II, My father Sgt. D. Stanford Howdyshell was private secretary to General Robert L. Eichelburger and most likely typed most of the later records that you have in your Eichelburger Collection. He may be able to shed some light on some of the material from his memories of that time when he was with the General most of the time. Contact me at the above Email address if interested in knowing how to contact my father.
David S. Howdyshell Jr.
Hello,
I just dropped in while doing research on the “Polar Bears” for an upcoming documentary film. The film is being produced by Pamela Peak the Granddaughter of a member of the 310th Engineers in north Russia. If you are interested to know more about the film here is a link http://www.polarbeardocumentary.com .
I collect vintage photos and have three or four of troops that served in Siberia. If you would like scans of them let me know I’ll dig them out and send you scans.
Regards,
Dale Niesen
South Rockwood, Michigan
My father, Harold Kay, was a member of the Polar Bear troop. His brother was instrumental in getting our government to bring back those boys. I have copies of the letters sent to Washington. I walked with my father when the dead were brought back and buried at White Chapel cemetery in Michigan.
Sorry, we drove behind the hearses when the boys were brought back from Russia to be buried.
